Seating Plan Maker

Set out your desks, type your class in, and it arranges them. Say who has to sit together and who has to be kept apart, then drag names between tables to finish it by hand. Free, no sign-up, and the names never leave your device.

Step 1

Your class

One name per line. Nothing here is sent to us - it stays in this browser.

Step 1

Step 2

Set a gender for each student if you want the "balance by gender" option below to work. This is optional.

Step 3

How to make a seating chart

Set how many desks you have and how many seats are at each. Paste your class in. Add any pairs who must sit together and any who must not. Then generate.

You can balance boys and girls across the tables, and the plan tells you if you have fewer seats than students rather than quietly leaving somebody out.

Finish it by hand

A generator gets you most of the way; the last few placements are things only you know. Drag any name onto another desk to move it, or drop it straight onto another name to swap the two - which is what you actually want when every table is already full. On a tablet, tap a name to pick it up and tap where it goes.

Change a desk's seat count and the plan updates underneath without reshuffling the arrangement you have just made by hand.

Typing your class in every term?

This page forgets your class when you close it. Teacher Daybook knows your roster, so the seating plan starts with your actual students already in it - and when a child leaves your class, they come off the seating plan too. Built by a teacher at an intermediate school in Auckland.
